The Village Nook
When this Greenwich Village apartment was originally converted from an old parking garage into residences, it inherited a fragmented layout full of odd angles, varying ceiling heights, and cold builder-grade finishes. Our goal was to clear away the chaos and replace it with a calm sanctuary tailored for family living. Our desgin transformed the disjointed floor plan into a grounded, cohesive home filled with natural light, intuitive flow, and genuine warmth.
The original layout forced circulation right through the center of the main gathering spaces, stranding furniture on awkward, floating islands. We shifted the path of travel around central architectural cores, establishing an intuitive circulation spine that guides movement naturally without interrupting conversation areas.
In the living room, library, and den, we traded the sterile glossy finishes for warm, layered, tactile materials. We introduced custom partition walls with soft, radiused edges to emphasize travel paths and carve out intimate pockets for daily relaxing and gathering.
A custom screened partition between the library and living room maintains an open visual connection while giving the library its own quiet, cozy identity. Across all seating areas, warm oak, organic shapes, and unlacquered brass soften the home's modern architectural silhouettes.
Because this family spends the majority of their daily routine around the kitchen, dining, and den areas, this space had to feel effortless. We carried our radiused design language directly into the kitchen with custom wood millwork, a sculpted hood, and a central island topped with natural stone. It's a warm, highly functional hub built for quiet morning coffees, shared family meals, and easy evening hosting.
We brought that same focus on materiality into the bathrooms, elevating the finishes with natural stone and unlacquered brass hardware. Designed to age gracefully, these living finishes will patina naturally over time through daily use.
