Maker Market

Live/Work Residential Development

Maker Market is our award-winning proposal for low-budget, sustainable, artist housing in Lexington, Kentucky. The LuigART Maker Spaces Competition, hosted by NoLi, aims to repurpose 30 shotgun-style houses to serve as live/work spaces for artists and makers as long-term residents of the community.

The typical suburban strategy is inverted as the rear yards become a unified public "Maker Market." This simple design strategy transforms the functions of both the neighborhood and the home.

The Maker Space is placed at the back of the home to allow interaction with the communal Maker Market shared by the rear yards of the homes. The natural grade of the property descends in this direction which grants the Maker Space a double height volume and loft within. To maximize the efficiency of the small space, a milled storage cabinet was used to divide the major program elements rather than traditional framed walls.
