Hearthlight House

Warm Interior Design for a First Home

For this young couple’s first home beyond the city, the goal was never a complete overhaul, but rather a thoughtful transformation. The house, recently flipped, carried a sense of cool impersonality. What they envisioned instead was a home that felt like them—warm, grounded, and quietly design-minded. Every choice was made with an eye toward longevity, creating a foundation that reflects who they are today while leaving room for the space to evolve as their lives and needs inevitably change.

The couple wanted a space that felt inviting – Somewhere they could curl up beside the fire with their family and friends. To achieve this, the main level was reoriented around the fireplace, which we resurfaced in hand-troweled plaster with a new travertine hearth. By opening it on both sides, the fireplace now connects multiple rooms and become the heart of the home. We lightened the floors and layered in furnishings that balance modern silhouettes with natural softness: rounded armchairs, woven textures, and low lighting that glows against the plaster fireplace.

Rather than tearing out the existing kitchen cabinetry, we collaborated with a millworker to craft new custom cabinet fronts. This subtle intervention transformed the space without the need for a full overhaul. A warmer palette emerged, with handmade tiles and natural finishes introducing layers of tactility and depth. The result is a kitchen that feels timeless, personal, and unmistakably their own—an elegant foundation that will continue to adapt as their home and life evolve.

On the lower level, the couple sought spaces that could reflect more of their individuality. The new office embraces a deep green that feels both cozy and immersive, setting the tone for a room devoted to focus and creativity. Conscious of waste, leftover stone from the fireplace was repurposed into built-in surfaces, while the existing concrete slab was polished rather than replaced—choices that honor the home’s character while layering in thoughtful new details. The result is a calm, moody workspace and lounge area designed to invite both focus and flow.

Our interior design and furnishings scope extended throughout all living spaces. We curated soft, organic forms and natural textures that layer effortlessly into the architecture. Each piece, from lighting to lounge furniture, was chosen for its tactile quality and lasting presence, proving that comfort and design integrity don’t require excess.

The woodshop, envisioned for the homeowner’s creative work, carries forward the same sense of craft found throughout the home. Solid white oak millwork lines the walls in a clean, flush rhythm, while polished concrete floors ground the space in an honest, utilitarian palette. The shop reflects the owners’ belief in spaces that evolve with purpose—an environment rooted in the present, and ready to grow with them over time.
